Unity Fellowship will meet on Saturday, February 25, 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel. Rev. Gary Baker will be our guest speaker. Gary is a volunteer tax preparer with the AARP free tax program, and this is his 12th year doing it. His program will present new features of the 2012 tax laws. Gary will have information on sites where people could go to take advantage of the AARP tax service. Gary will have a question and answer session following his presentation. We will have a "Dish to Pass" supper first; beverages and dessert will be provided. Bring your table service and some friends for a program that should be very informatiive! -Dick Barber, Co-President

During Lent, Pastor Leon will preach a series of sermons on the theme "Walking with God in the Desert." We will study the Bible to learn about the experiences of God's people in the desert and our own desert experiences in our personal lives. Plan to listen to the sermons on Sunday and attend one of the Bible studies on Sunday (begins February 26th--1st Sunday in Lent) or the series on Wednesday night (begins February 29th, 7:00 p.m. in the Church Library).

Heather Fais is a graduate of Indiana University with a Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance. After participating in the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC and Spoleto, Italy, she moved to Germany, where she was a member of the Heilbronn Chamber Orchestra, Bamberg Symphony, and the Württemberg State Opera Orchestra Stuttgart. In 1984 she returned to the US to accept a position with the Syracuse Symphony. In addition to her private violin students, Heather is a member of the Seneca String Quartet and has performed with the Kansas City String Festival, the Garth Newell Music Center Festival, and the Skaneateles Festival. What IS Financial Peace University* anyway?

What: A 13-week class in which participants learn financial planning strategies like emergency funds; paying off debt; insurance, real estate and investment; planning for retirement; setting financial goals and communicating about money. In each 2-hour session, the class will watch an entertaining lesson on DVD and then engage in an active small group discussion.

Ms. Fais is teaching violin on Saturdays in Room 201, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.. Heather Fais is a graduate of Indiana University with a Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance. After participating in the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC and Spoleto, Italy, she moved to Germany, where she was a member of the Heilbronn Chamber Orchestra, Bamberg Symphony, and the Württemberg State Opera Orchestra Stuttgart. In 1984 she returned to the US to accept a position with the Syracuse Symphony. In addition to her private violin students, Heather is a member of the Seneca String Quartet and has performed with the Kansas City String Festival, the Garth Newell Music Center Festival, and the Skaneateles Festival. Heather Fais is giving violin lessons on Wednesdays 5-6 p.m. (Room 207). Heather Fais is a graduate of Indiana University with a Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance. After participating in the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC and Spoleto, Italy, she moved to Germany, where she was a member of the Heilbronn Chamber Orchestra, Bamberg Symphony, and the Württemberg State Opera Orchestra Stuttgart. In 1984 she returned to the US to accept a position with the Syracuse Symphony. In addition to her private violin students, Heather is a member of the Seneca String Quartet and has performed with the Kansas City String Festival, the Garth Newell Music Center Festival, and the Skaneateles Festival. Persichetti, is active in Central New York as a teacher, pianist,

accompanist, adjudicator. He has concertized in the USA, Europe,

and Asia. Local performances have seen him on the stages of many

college/faculty concert series, the Everson Museum, On-Center, and

live on WXXI-FM, Rochester, NY, WPEL-FM, Montrose, PA, and

WCNY-FM, Syracuse, NY.

John Spradling earned a Master’s Degree at The Juilliard School,

where he studied with Abbey Simon and Sascha Gorodnitzki. He has

also studied with Jorge Bolet and spent two years of special study at

the Vienna Hochschule under Hans Graf. During this time, he

served as a special instructor in the home of famed mezzo-soprano

Christa Ludwig.

John Spradling is one of the most successful private piano teachers

in Central New York, and has sent students on scholarship to the

Eastman School of Music, Indiana University, Cincinnati College-

Conservatory, Tanglewood, and many other conservatories and

festivals. Spradling has adjudicated for many organizations in the

USA, Europe, and Asia, and in January 2012 will serve on the jury of

the Fifth International Competition of Contemporary Music for

Children and Youth in Krakow, Poland.

I teach private suzuki violin lessons in my home and group lessons at the First Baptist Church of Manlius on Thursday evenings in room 203 from 5:45-7:30pm.

Bio: In 1994 Sue Edwards started teaching in Harrisonburg, VA as a Suzuki violin teacher. After moving in 2002 to Syracuse, NY, she has taught and organized the Central NY area Suzuki teachers creating annual multi-studio workshops and play-ins. She also helped raise funds for the AMS Scholarship fund which sends Central NY area students to Summer Suzuki Institutes. Sue loves her summer Suzuki Teacher Training, and incorporates Music Mind Games, Rebecca Penneys fundamental flow techniques, Brain Gym, and technology such as Smart Music, GarageBand and Sibelius into her studio. In the fall of 2011, she begins her third year as president of the Central New York Association of Music Teachers, a local teacher's organization who all promote music education in Central New York.

I Invite You:

I invite you to be part of our church focus this fall – “Get Connected!”

Why the “Get Connected” focus?

What does it look like when people are connected to each other in a positive and life-giving way? I think of laughter, people at ease with each other and interested in each other. I think of people being family – rejoicing in the accomplishments and celebrations of each other and looking beyond the short-comings and annoying characteristics that each of us have. I think of people feeling a sense of unity and purpose.

When people are dis-connected there is a gradual loss of these signs of life and community.

We have a choice. Strong relationships don’t just happen. A lot in our culture works against relationships. But we can choose to invest in each other and in our relationship to God. We can choose to experience the abundant life God wants for us.

This past winter, our Nehemiah Team offered a path toward vital spiritual relationships for our church. The path includes:

A theme: “Connecting with the Heart of God.”
A model: 3 primary areas of focus: worship, discipleship and service.
A Future Story: A scenario in 2014 about a new participant at our church.

While we have had many conversations and some actions in response to this path, for many in our church “Connecting with the Heart of God” has been only a theme or a slogan.

The “Get Connected!” Fall focus includes the October worship services, small groups and a periodic devotional. The emphasis will help you understand a future path for our church and to begin to walk that path with each other.

Each participant in the small groups will be challenged to grow in relationship to God and the other members of the group. There will be opportunity to discuss our church focus and to make input that can help shape our future.

As we prepare for this focus, I ask 3 things of you.

Pray for the planning, the small group leaders and small groups, and the worship services.
Sign-up to be part of one of our groups (see the middle page in this newsletter)
Come with an open spirit and share yourself with others. Be ready for what God may do among us.

Spiritual Growth and Direction

Spiritual Growth

Spiritual growth doesn’t just happen. Experience tells me that to grow and be vitally alive in Christ, I need to be prayerful, scripturally-attentive and deliberate.

I often get distracted. The demands and stresses of life draw me away from God. At one point I will feel quite connected to God and at the next I realize there are other forces like pride, envy, fear or anxiety driving my life. Forces that take me down a path of spiritual death.

Spiritual growth doesn’t just happen. For me, growth has often been stimulated by a person God has planted in my life. As a child, it was my parents who taught me to pray and provided an example of faithfulness. As a high school student, it was other youth in my church and the adults who helped us ask and answer some of our questions. In college, a local pastor challenged my assumptions and encouraged me to live my faith. As a pastor, I have been blessed with mentors and colleagues who listened to me and shared their discoveries and life challenges.

Spiritual growth doesn’t just happen. In the book of Acts, we read about Barnabas (his name means “Son of Encouragement”) who traveled with Paul and mentored John Mark at an important moment in his life (15:36-39). Do you have a Barnabas in your life? Someone who encourages you, challenges you and helps you think more honestly?

Spiritual Direction

In recent years, I have been greatly blessed by meeting with a Spiritual Director. In a hectic life, this is a place where once a month for an hour I can reflect on my inner life – my questions, my challenges, my anxieties, my sense of God in my life. My director gives his full attention and listens.

Sometimes he asks me questions. Sometimes he helps me see ways I am missing God in my life. Sometimes he suggests a book I might read or a practice that might help me work through a question I am trying to answer.

As your pastor, I want to walk with you in your faith journey. I am sensing the skills of spiritual direction will help me do that. In October, I will begin a 9-month mentor program for Spiritual Direction at the Spiritual Renewal Center in Syracuse.

An Offer! I want to offer to walk with you in a Spiritual Direction relationship. If you are interested, speak to me. Feel free to ask questions and explore whether this would be helpful to you.

High Seas 2010

In 2010 First Baptist Manlius and Christ Church hosted 61 children in our community to a week's worth of fun and Bible-based learning on the High Seas during our summer Vacation Bible School.

As the crews moved between the two churches they learned about the Bible's truth and application in their lives and that they are empowered to share this message with everyone. They built crafts that reinforced the idea that the Bible can show them them the best way to live their life and that they can always draw on it for comfort when the seas are stormy. They enjoyed the tale of Chadder, the stowaway chipmunk who learns that the most important values are not fame and glory, but to spread the good news to those that don't know it yet. They participated in the reenactment of the story Paul's voyages from prison to a ship where his faith brings him to an island where he carried out his mission of evangelizing to unbelievers.

They shared with each other how they see God each day and learned that it was ok to talk about how God impacts their lives. It was inspiring to hear how the crews identified nature around them and the actions of their family members as everyday "God sightings" in their world. We sang, danced, ate and prayed together this week.

Over $200 was donated by the attending families to benefit the people that are experiencing hardship in Haiti, Pakistan, and other places following disasters. Several basket-loads of non-perishable food items were also donated by the families and has been donated to the FM food pantry.

Once again, we thank all of the volunteers and organizers of this joint event for their time and willingness to share with the children of our community.

Thank You and Summer Activities

On Sunday, June 6th, you took the time to recognize the 35th anniversary of my ordination. It was an anniversary that might have been easy for me to ignore. Instead, you made it into a day to remember and celebrate.

35 years ago, a month before I was to be married and 3 months before I would begin as pastor at my first church -- the York-Mumford Baptist Parish – I knelt while hands were laid on me and a prayer was said, all signs that people believed God had called me into this work of ministry.

Your taking time to celebrate that event with me is also validation of God’s continuing call on my life to serve in ministry. Thank you for your many expressions at the reception and individually.

I continue to learn as I grow in ministry. I have experienced God in the relationships and work we do together.

All Eyes on Africa!

While most of the world and our nation have focused our eyes on Africa to see the World Cup Soccer Tournament, eager to see how well the United States can compete with other nations, we at First Baptist have our eyes focused on other places in Africa. Our prayers and concerns are especially focused on three countries in June and July:

Egypt – Christy Brownell is serving on the staff of this year’s American Baptist X-treme Team. The team returns on July 13th. Check out the team member blogs at: http://www.xtremeteamonline.org/teams/374

Kenya – Brodie Shephard will spend the first 2 weeks of July in Kenya with a short-term mission team.

Mozambique – Ross Binder is spending a month with his son Michael in Mozambique and traveling around Africa.

Summer Preaching and Study Series:

Chapter 11 in the book of Hebrews is a listing of those in Faith’s Hall of Fame. This summer in sermon and study, I will focus on the message and characters of this chapter. It is an exciting chapter. What is faith? How have we seen it in others? What might faith look like in yours or my life?

My 6 sermon series will begin June 27th and 5 Wednesday night Bible studies will begin on July 21st. With each of these we will explore the richness and depth of this wonderful chapter.

The Spirit Is On the Move

At Pentecost, Jesus gave his spirit to his followers. When we receive Jesus into our lives, he gives us his Spirit.

In the Bible, the book of Acts is the story of the Spirit “on the move”. From these stories, we learn how to live by the Spirit and why the Spirit is important.

Paul is a model for us. In Acts, we watch the Spirit guide Paul on his mission, bringing the good news of Jesus to the Gentiles. The Spirit counsels, comforts and empowers Paul.

If we are going to be alive in our service, our mission, our ministry for Jesus, we need to pay attention to the Spirit.

During May, I preached two sermons from the 16th chapter of Acts. I find Paul’s ventures in the city of Philippi are compelling. Here are a few lessons I take away from this chapter:

Listen to the Spirit. Paul had his agenda. He knew where he wanted to go, but something prevented him. He kept praying and listening. The answer came. “Come to Macedonia!”
Stay active and engaged. Paul was on the move. He learned from his actions and circumstances what God was doing.
Your mission is likely to be outside the church. It was Paul’s custom to begin his work in a new place in the local synagogue. But in Philippi, he does it differently. He goes out to meet people where they are. In conversation with Lydia, a merchant in the city, Paul shares the good news. The text says that God opened her heart and Lydia becomes a believer and is baptized.
Some of the people you meet are already inclined to believe. We are told Lydia was a worshiper of God. She was seeking, drawn to God, but not yet identifying herself with God’s people. Paul’s witness helped her take the next step.
Many people live with frustration and fear in their work and in their lives. When Paul and Silas are put in prison, they live the good news, being at peace and singing in a fearful situation. When an earthquake unlocks their cells, the jailer is afraid. Paul and Silas answer his questions, share the good news of Jesus and he too believes and is baptized.
When someone gives their life to Jesus, the Spirit gives them a generous heart and a readiness to serve. After receiving Jesus, both Lydia and the jailer care for Paul and invite him into their homes.

People who write about culture today tell us there are many people like Lydia and the jailer in our culture -- people seeking God, in need of God. They are seeking in many places.

Is God leading you or our church to help others be connected to God? Maybe it is a co-worker, neighbor, friend or family member. Where is the Spirit leading you? Stay tuned, stay attentive, keep listening. Many today are interested in Jesus but not the church. God’s mission for us is, “Go into the world …” (Matthew 28:19) Where is the Spirit leading you?

Connecting with the heart of God!

What is your reaction to this phrase? What do you picture? What do you imagine a person who is connected to the heart of God looks like? Is doing? Saying?

Where is your heart connected?

Jesus says “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Luke 12:34). He also says, “Sell your possessions and give to the poor.” (v.33) What is your reaction to that statement? That will tell you something about where your heart is connected.

There are many forces tugging at our hearts. Jesus was tempted in the desert by those same forces. The draw of possessions and the status they give us, the lure of power and the illusion that we can control our lives and future and the desire to be well thought of and celebrated by others.

When we surrender to temptations our hearts are disconnected from God’s heart and we are unable to make that connection on our own.

God desires to be connected to us and takes the initiative to make it possible. The story of Holy Week is the story of God reaching out to us, making a way for our hearts to connect with his heart.

We see Jesus’ love for the Father as he celebrates the Passover meal with his disciples. We see his love for his disciples as he washes their feet, as he shares the bread and cup, as he grieves for the one who will betray him, as he teaches his disciples to love each other.

Jesus’ heart stays firmly rooted in God as he faces his trial, the denial of friends, his suffering and humiliation, his feeling that even God has abandoned him on the cross. From the cross he speaks words of forgiveness, words of concern for his mother and disciples, words of confidence about God’s plan of eternity.

On the cross, Jesus made a way for us.

There is no formula that connects us to the heart of God. There is no effort we can take to make it happen. But, there is God’s grace poured out at Calvary that makes a way. We are invited to receive.

What does it look like when a people are connected to the heart of God? I think you see vital worship. I think you see people growing in their lives, listening to God and sharing how God is working in their lives. I think you see people generously sharing themselves in love and service for others

Hygiene Kits for Haiti

Thank you to everyone who responded to the request to help provide hygiene kits in the wake of the earthquake in Haiti. On Sunday, February 7th our children and youth put together 52 kits to be delivered to Church World Service.

Blanket Sunday Collection

On Valentine’s Day, Sunday, February 14th, Jill Doss shared with us pictures from Haiti, where blankets were being used by earthquake survivors. We offered prayers for the people of Haiti and others who survive such disasters. Our congregation responded by giving $700 that will purchase 120 blankets. Thank you for your concern and generosity toward others.

Mission right at home

The F-M Food Pantry continues to help alleviate hunger and offer emergency assistance in the F-M area. Remember those nearby. Bring your canned goods and other non-perishable food items to church to support the F-M Food Pantry's service to families in our neighborhood.

America For Christ Offering

Share Christ with people all across America. The America for Christ Offering we receive in March supports work close to home through American Baptist Churches of NYS (camping ministries, work with refugees, education, various supports for local churches, etc.) and work in more distant places across the United States. Please find a letter and envelope enclosed in this newsletter and give generously.

American Baptist Women’s Ministries

Scholarships are available to High School Graduates and continuing College students from American Baptist Women’s Ministries through the ABW Ministries Scholarship Fund. Applications are available in the church office and are due no later than Monday, March 1st.

On March 15 and 22 at 10:30 a.m., Rev. Cindy Mapstone will lead a 2-week Bible Study in the Library followed by a soup luncheon in the Chapel. Committee: Shirley Mapstone and Ruby Pfohl.

Another ABC/NYS Board of Mission coffee and luncheon meeting will take place on Saturday, March 6, 9-3 p.m. The luncheon will be held in the gym. Greg Short is our chef. The committee is Shirley B. Mapstone, Ruby Pfohl, and Betty Heller.

We are still collecting Campbell’s UPC codes to help Springbrook (formerly Upstate Homes for Children and Adults) provide supplies for handicapped children and adults. There is a collection box in the Narthex for these codes or leave them in the ABW mail slot.

Mark you calendars for a bridal shower on Sunday, May 2nd, 2 pm in the Chapel for Jillian Everly. Also, the Mother-Daughter Banquet is set for Tuesday, May 11th, 6:30 pm in the gym Darlene and Lauren Endy will take us on a trip “Around the World.”

A Lenten Journey

We have begun the 40 day season of Lent: Ash Wednesday to Holy week.

Emilie Griffin says,

"Lent has been marked out by the church as a time to ask oneself the big questions:
What am I doing with my time? What am I doing with my life? How well am I expressing the imprint of Christ upon my heart? How devoted is my service? How is my life unfolding in terms of my primary goal of living with God forever?”

What questions might you ask of yourself during this season?

Our worship and study during Lent will focus on spiritual surrender. I hope our reflection will help you assess where you are with God and the places in your life you may yet need to surrender to God.

A surrendered life is a powerful life. It is Spirit-directed and Spirit-empowered. Rather than a life that quits in defeat, a life that is surrendered to God, trusts God and often enters places where fear would never permit us before.

Before Jesus began his ministry, he was led by the Spirit into the desert (Chapters 4 of either Matthew or Luke). There he fasted for 40 days. Jesus placed himself in the hands of the Father and opened himself to an experience that God put before him.

At the end of his fast he is famished, weak and vulnerable and is tempted by the Devil to end his fast (turn stone into bread) and to change his allegiance. Instead, Jesus surrendered to God and resists the evil one.

What temptations do you face? In what ways are you tempted to turn away from God and choose self-gratification or to please the powers around you?

Note how Jesus quotes scripture from memory when he was tempted. To live a surrendered life we will need to be scripturally-attentive. We’ll need to be people of prayer to sense where God is leading us. We’ll also need to walk with each other to be encouraged and challenged to be honest.

During this season of Lent, are we willing to place ourselves in God’s hands and practice surrender? Let us enter this together.

The Nehemiah Envisioning Team has shared a model for how individuals grow as we each follow Jesus through worship, discipleship and service. This past Saturday a group of 32 leaders at First Baptist gathered and explored how we can each grow in this model.

We read a story that was a 2014 testimony of a person, who has not yet arrived at First Baptist. We asked our imaginations to add to this story. Those attending thought of exciting scenarios that God might create through us at First Baptist in the coming years.

For me, the real key to this model is staying attentive to the Holy Spirit in our lives. How do we listen and respond to God's leading?

As a next step, on Saturday morning February 6^th we will identify the "growth edges" -- first steps we can take to move forward with this model. Then we will develop action plans to help us intentionally live this model. All are invited to help.

Over the next three Sundays I will preach sermons that explore God's call and claims in our lives. We will listen ot stories of two Old Testament prophets and the inaugural public event in Jesus' ministry.

Rosey and I are thankful to be part of this Church family. As we walk with you through this season of Advent and Christmas we appreciate your expressions of gratitude and caring. Blessing Sunday

One way God blesses us is for us to hear the stories of how others have been blessed and for us to share stories of how God has been active in our lives. On December 27th, the last Sunday of 2009, you are invited to share ways God has blessed you during this past year.

Prepare by looking for God’s Blessings

Bring with you: a story, a memory, a scripture that has been important to you, a song that has helped you be God-focused or something else that communicates a way in which God has blessed or been active in your life during this past year.

Pray Together:

At Christmas, we watch as the baby is born. We receive the invitation for Christ to be born in us. The promise of God’s spirit is that God will continue to make life new in each of us. What is God birthing in you? What will be born in our church, the people of First Baptist Church of Manlius?

You are invited to join others in prayer during the month of January. Groups will meet to support each other in prayer and also to pray for our church. God wants to do a new thing among us. God wants to birth in us something special. Pray that we will recognize it and receive it.

How can you participate? Here are some options:

You can sign-up to join a prayer triplet on Sunday morning.
You can find a prayer partner to meet with once a week for January.
A small group you already meet with could agree to pray.

Speak to me and ask questions. Let me know how you plan to participate.

Christmas "With God"

“… and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means, ‘God is with us.’” - (Matthew 1:23)

“And the word became flesh and lived among us.” - (John 1:14)

What is this story? This thought that God gave up his heavenly throne, put on skin and came down to live with the human family?

Jesus was born as a child. He was a teenager. He learned a craft and served his community. He was also a well respected Rabbi – a teacher.

“Incarnation” is the word theologians use to describe God becoming human and living among us.

What difference does the incarnation make to you? Why is this important? Why is Christmas important?

Most of us don’t get it. We haven’t been looking for a God who becomes human and lives an ordinary life. Most of us would rather become like God (the first temptation – Genesis 3:5). Most of us would rather have the power and celebrity of God than our common lives.

But God chose something way different. God chose to come into our every day common lives and infuse our lives with something quite extraordinary.

When sin and evil were having its way with this world, God chose to bring his love and forgiveness into our lives.

What difference does this make? First of all, it means God didn’t give up on us.

When we, in our power, were unable to turn around, God came into our world and spoke a word of peace.

What difference does his coming make? His coming means that we have a human figure who is our model. One who shows us a new way to live.

What difference does it make? This Jesus, God walking among us, experiences the joys and sufferings of this world. When we cry out to God, he fully understands our need.

What difference does it make? By coming to us, God has invited us to live a “with-God life”. We are invited to follow Jesus. He promises to walk with us. In the with-God life, we no longer live by fear and submit to the powers of this world. Instead we live with joy and find the power to love.

During this Advent season, we will explore and hear the invitation to the “With-God life.” Come and journey with your church family as we move to the manger. Invite God to walk with you.

What is Church Membership?

Celebrate with me on Sunday, November 1st, as we welcome several people as new members of First Baptist Church.

What does it mean to be a member? In many organizations, membership is thought of as those who have signed-up, paid their dues and come to the meetings. In the church (the body of Christ), being a member is seen differently. St. Paul outlines the biblical understanding in I Corinthians 12. He says a member is like a part of one’s body (an eye, an ear, a foot). In Paul’s thinking, Christ is the head and each of us is part of the body. Each member belongs to Christ and to each other. One member cannot say to another, “I have no need of you.” It would be like the eye saying to the ear, “I don’t need you.”

In Baptist churches, the nature of our relationship to each other is outlined in a covenant. Each individual Baptist church writes a covenant that names the commitments we make to God and to each other. The covenant of First Baptist Church of Manlius is pasted in the front of our hymnal. We read it periodically, at a communion service or our Annual Meeting.

What does our covenant say? Here are a few of the things I note as I read it:

We are people who have received Jesus as Lord and Savior.
We agree to serve together in ways that God makes known to us.
We agree to seek God’s will individually and corporately - through prayer, Bible study and worship.
We agree to give regularly to support the ministry of the church, to help the poor and share the good news with others.
We commit ourselves to care for each other by celebrating each others joys and demonstrating loving concern in times of distress.
We agree to keep Jesus at the center of our thought and action and reflect the joy of his presence in our fellowship.
We work to build homes of Christian love and nurture.
We strive in all our relationships to witness the reconciling love of God to all people.

How do these commitments work for you? Which are most important to you? Which are hardest for you to keep? Are there commitments you would add?

On Sunday, November 1st as we welcome new members of First Baptist, we will read the covenant and remember our commitments to God and each other.

How will we work together to be the people our covenant calls us to be? Talk with God about it.

Ann Morales continues to collect used shoes, sandals and sneakers to send to Limbe, Haiti. On June 3rd she mailed a shipment of 22 boxes (265 pounds).

Ann worked as a nurse at a mission hospital in Limbe in 1972-1973. Belle,
a co-worker in Haiti, and her husband started this mission of delivering used shoes to the people in Limbe. Ann has collected these since 1995. Over that time her shipments have totaled 3,100 pounds.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Ann in this wonderful mission.

Iroquois Association Meeting, Sunday Classes and October Worship

Iroquois Association: We at First Baptist will host the Annual Meeting of the Iroquois Baptist Association on Sunday afternoon, October 25.

I encourage you to attend and help us welcome our brothers and sisters in Christ of American Baptist Churches in Cayuga, Cortland, Onondaga and Oswego counties. The association is a basic unit of American Baptist life, and this will be an opportunity to experience it first hand.

We will lead a worship service at 2:30 p.m. A business meeting will follow. At 5 p.m. we will welcome people in our chapel for refreshments and fellowship.

Shirley Mapstone is coordinating the refreshments. Would you help? Let her know.
Our Fall Sunday School started on September 20th. I want to say thank you to everyone who has agreed to teach a youth or children’s class. The work you do is vitally important.

I also want to thank Erm Ferris, who teaches the Adult Journeys Class and Jill Doss and Al Dominy who have led Bible Discussion groups. I will be teaching a class in the chapel entitled, “The Jesus Way.” We will use DVD presentations, Bible study and discussions to learn how one lives more like Jesus.

Where is your place in the Sunday morning education time? Are you teaching or helping in a class? Do you attend one of these groups? You are welcome and your presence enriches others in our fellowship.

We will be discussing "The Jesus Way" led by Pastor Leon in the Chapel at 9:45am on Sunday mornings.

Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” (John 14:6)

We focus a lot on the truth and the life of Jesus, but do we know what he means by the way?

Using DVD presentations, scripture and group discussion, we will explore the ways that Jesus is the way.

Rotary's Books for the World

Thank you to all the members who donated books to the Rotary's Books for the World. Our Church filled four boxes with excellent books that can be used. To date, over 30,000 pounds of books have been collected by Rotary Clubs.

The South African Rotarians are trying to help not only the schools in South Africa but to assist areas of great need in Southern and Eastern Africa. The Books for the World Project has distributed books to qualified institutions for over a decade now. More than 6 million books have been distributed.

Why is there such a demand for books? The governments of Southern Africa can not yet underwrite the costs of all the books needed for the rapidly growing public and private school systems. Many countries in Africa do not offer public education to all their youth. Poverty rules in these countries. Without educating their youth, they will not be able to grow a work force that can feed their people and poverty will continue to rule. Where poverty rules hate also rules. The Rotary Clubs in the USA and South Africa are addressing the needs of the impoverished schools and libraries for books and other educational materials which assist both our literacy and peace initiatives. Imagine trying to teach without any books for yourself or your students. Rotary District 9300 personnel have actually been asked to cut books in half so that two students could have something to read. Rotary's response has been to supply a complete book to every child.

2009's Vacation Bible School was a huge success.

80 children participated and raised $427.37 towards a well project in Thailand and collected over 100 items for the Fayetteville-Manlius Food Pantry. Each day the staff encouraged the kids to see how God appears in their daily lives. Throughout the week the children' voices rang through the church to the day's Bible Point with a hearty, "Fear Not!"

Activities revolved around:

Singing songs during "Sing and Play".
In the "Bible Bayou" children enjoyed an interactive and dramatic reading of the day's Bible story.
At the "Dockside Drive" In students learned about God's love for them through video and discussion.
The "Gator Games" station provided an outlet for their boundless energy while providing learning opportunities during physical play outdoors.
Each student learned about God in the "Crawfish Crafts" room while making something to take home for the day.
Every day the students learned about God while they helped make a snack related to the day's Bible story at the "Snack Shack".

The older children sought to serve the community by performing random acts of kindness, including:

Headlight and rear view mirror washing
Polishing the church sanctuary furniture
Making some of the large "building blocks" out of paper for the "Bible Bayou" station
Cleaning and disinfecting all of the outdoor playground surfaces

Perhaps the best highlight of the week happened on Thursday when the children were asked to come up to the cross in the church if they wanted to ask Jesus to be their friend. The pews were quickly emptied and the cross covered with childrens' names as they each made the decision to ask God to be a part of their life.

Thanks to all the volunteers and organizers for making this year's VBS such a big success.

As pastor, I am eager to introduce you to this church family. We are a unique gathering of people across many age groups and reflecting many experiences.

That which draws us together is a common belief that God loves us immensely, as God has shown us in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. We are drawn together by a common desire to follow Jesus in our daily lives.

We worship together, learn together and serve together in our local community and around the world.

Through Jesus, God has welcomed each of us into a personal relationship and has welcomed us into this family. We, therefore, are eager to welcome others who would like to walk with us as we come to know Jesus better and learn to follow and serve him.

The Jesus Way!

What is the center of your life? What difference does that make to you?

I want my life to be God-centered. My experience is that when I am God-centered I am most alive and most fully myself. Yet I often drift toward being self-centered.

When self-centered, there is no room for God. I trust in my own wisdom and power. My decisions are made out of anxiety and fear more often than joy.

What is your experience?

Jesus showed us the way to a God-centered life. In response to Thomas’ concern that he did not know the way, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” (John 14:6).

I’ve been reading a book this summer by Eugene Peterson entitled, The Jesus Way. He writes, “Prayerfully and scripturally attentive, Jesus deliberately chose the way he would live. If we choose to follow him, we must be just as prayerful, scripturally attentive and deliberate.” (p.28)

I like his focus that to follow in the Jesus way, we need to develop a strong prayer life, keep tuned to the scriptures and be deliberate in our choices.

Everyone who follows Jesus needs encouragement to keep focused on the Jesus way. It’s not easy. There are impediments to the Jesus way. Many lures and distractions cause us to lose focus and lead us off the way.
I also want First Baptist to be a place where we take seriously living in the way of Jesus. To do that, we need to encourage and challenge each other. I have hope that our worship services, Sunday School classes, and periodic small groups will be places of encouragement to be in the Jesus way.

Enjoy the remainder of your summer. It is a good time to develop the practice of prayer, the attentiveness to scripture and making deliberate choices for a God-centered life. I am practicing that. Won’t you join me?

The Bonillas are touring the US this summer, trying to visit as many of their friends, families and supporters. They are currently serving in Puerto Rico. Summer Youth News and Events planned

One focus of service for the next few months is decorating for Vacation Bible School. We’ve had our initial meeting and have some AWESOME ideas to turn the Sanctuary and surrounding hallways into a bayou. (pssst…a bayou is like a swamp) Questions, talk with Christy or George.

July 26^th: While your parents are at the Quarterly Meeting, we’ll have our own rockin’ gathering. Both meetings will run the same length of time.

August 9^th: Directly after Worship before the Church Picnic at Mapstone’s. We’ll work on some of our VBS Decoration “stuff” then make a sweet treat to take over to the picnic. Your parents can meet us at the Mapstone’s, we’ll travel over as a group.

August 15^th: It’s a Saturday! We’re putting together the Bayou! Time TBD, but plan on hanging out with FBC friends that day!

End of August: We’ll have a “End of Summer” Fun-time as a whole group. Have ideas? Talk with an advisor.

LOOKING TO THE FALL: September 20^th: Fall Youth Group Kick-off! Inviting our new youth group members and kickin’ off the new school year in STYLE!

"Bad Girls of the Bible" summer study forming

All FBC women and their friends are invited to join in a fun study called Bad Girls of the Bible, which is based on the book of the same title by Liz Curtis Higgs. In this seven ween study we will highlight a different biblical woman each week and discover what we can learn from her. Cine to al it a few sessions - whatever your summer schedule allows.

We will meet on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 - 8:00 in the church library beginning on July 8 and ending on August 19. Barbara Brace, Rosey Oaks-Lee and Darlene Endy will share the leadership role. Please join us! Sign up sheets are in the entranceways.
